A MAYOR'S wife has given an "emergency kit" to the couple who will succeed them.

Peter Makin, Mayor of Amber Valley, will retire at the borough council's annual meeting on May 19.

To mark the occasion, his wife, Sue, presented successor Alan Cox and his wife, Jackie ,with louis vuitton bags an unusual gift.

She gave them foot and hand cream to help them cope with the amount of walking around they will be doing throughout next year.

At a reception following the council's civic service at Belper, Mrs Makin said: "You should always wear comfortable shoes." Mrs Cox, a councillor and former mayor of Belper, said: "I know you have to look after your hands and feet as well as having a good pair of shoes."
